- Hollanditis
- Aword coined in the early 1980s as a result of the Dutch protests against cruise missiles in Europe. Although the government had accepted deployment on the airbase of Woens drecht (Northern Brabant), domestic opposition was strong. In 1981, 400,000 people demonstrated in Amsterdam, and in 1983, 550,000 in The Hague; also in 1983, 3.2 million citizens peti tioned the government to reject the arms race. Because demonstra tions against cruise missiles followed in other European cities, the Dutch protests were seen as a contagious disease, dubbed “Hollan ditis.” See also COMMUNISM; INTERKERKELIJK VREDES BERAAD (IKV).
